Claude "Bert" Goodwin, 92, of Ripley WV, died Saturday, October 26, 2002, at his home in Ripley. He was born August 9, 1910, at Ripley, son of the late Claude and Marie Vail Goodwin.
His long list of accomplishments include being a member of the law firm, Goodwin & Goodwin; member of the American Bar and West Virginia State Bar Association; member of United Bankshares Board of Directors 1985-1997; Secretary and Counsel for United Fuel Gas Company 1963-1967; Vice President, Chief Counsel and member of the Board of Directors Charleston Group Companies, Columbia Gas Systems 1967-1973; graduate of Ripley High School 1927; AB degree from West Virginia Wesleyan 1931-Editor in Chief of Wesleyan Pharos; Graduate studies at Northwestern University 1932; LLB graduate West Virginia University 1940; member "Mountain"Honorary; Editor in Chief of the West Virginia Law Review 1939-1940; "Order of the Coif" - Number one in Class of 1940; Associate Professor of Law, West Virginia University 1947-1948; Teacher and Athletic Coach Buffalo and Ripley High Schools, 1931-1937; Past President and member of the Alumni Association, West Virginia University 1967-1968; Member of the Board of Trustees of West Virginia Wesleyan College 1973-1977; Member of the Board of Trustees of Sunrise Museum and Science Hall 1971-1973; Past President(1977-1979) and Board member of Charleston Area Medical Center Foundation 1977-1996; U. S. Navy WWII, Combat Air Support Control, Pacific Theater Commendation Medal; Recipient of Jackson County Distinguished Community Service Award 1990; Chair Governor's Committee for the launching and commissioning of the USS West Virginia submarine 1989-1990; Chair Public Defender Corporation, West Virginia Fifth Judicial Circuit 1996-2002; Biography Marquis Who's Who in America; and West Virginia Bar Foundation Fellow.
He is survived by his daughter, Judy G. Waller and her husband, Robin; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Marie Watson of Ashville, NC; two grandchildren, Mr. & Mrs. Morgan B. Hayes of Wheeling WV and Mr. & Mrs. Torren A. Hayes of Ripley WV; two great-grandchildren, Madyson Vail and Mason Claude; caregiver, Margaret Randolph.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Ireta Watson Goodwin. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 29, 2002, at the Epworth United Methodist Church, Ripley. Burial in the Pine Hill Cemetery, Ripley.
