Edgar Eugene “Gene” Winters, age 76, of Ripley, died on September 27, 2011 at home surrounded by his family following a long and courageous battle with multiple myeloma. Gene was born on February 5, 1935 in Ripley, WV and was the son of the late A. Ford and Macel W. Winters. He is survived by sister Lena M. (Jim) Wolford of Ripley and younger brother Robert A. (Linda) Winters of Tampa, Fl.
He was a 1952 graduate of Huntington High School and attended Greenbrier Military School where he enjoyed success on the football field of both schools. Following school he served his country honorably in the U.S. Army. Gene attended Marshall College and later returned to Ripley to work for Kaiser Aluminum in 1958 and retired after 30 plus years of service. He enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities throughout his life. Boating, hunting, fishing, camping and NASCAR were among some of his favorite interests. Gene was member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Ripley.
He is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Brenda Hurt Winters; his sons: Rod (Tammy) Winters and Roger (Jane) Winters; their mother, Lois B. Winters; stepson: Nathan (Sara) Swisher, all of Ripley; and stepdaughter: Stephanie (Jason) White of Morgantown; grandchildren: Zack; Spencer; Parker; Lauren and step grandchildren Breana and Paige. Gene was predeceased by his wife, Mildred H. Winters, and survived by her children and grandchildren.
Gene was blessed with a caring family and many thanks are given to his brother-in-laws and sister- in-laws for their comfort, care and support. Visitation was held from 5 to 8pm, Thursday, September 29, 2011 with the funeral service conducted at 11am on Friday, September 30, 2011 at Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, WV with Pastor Ryan Brooks officiating. Burial followed in Fairplain Cemetery, Ripley, WV. A luncheon reception will follow immediately after the graveside service at Waybright Funeral Home for all who wish to attend.
The family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF), 383 Main Avenue, 5th Floor, Norwalk, CT 06851 or www.themmrf.org or to the building funds at Calvary or Epworth United Methodist Churches in Ripley.
