Longtime Ripley resident, Katharyn Hartman "Katie" Kessel, 88, of Ripley, died Saturday, May 2, 1992, at Jackson General Hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was active in community affairs until her illness and was a former teacher in Jackson County schools.  As president of the Ripley High School Parent-Teachers Association, she led a successful project to furnish the kitchen for the school lunch program when the high school first served lunches at the old location on Church Street.

She was a member of the Parkersburg Community College Jackson County Advisory Board, a 4-H leader in Jackson County and former 4-H club agent in Kanawha County, a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Jackson County Development Authority, and the Jackson County Historical Society.
Mrs. Kessel was a 50-year member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Ripley.

A native of Elkins, she was born March 4, 1904, the daughter of the late Jacob Gates and Mary Catherine Kinsinger Hartman, and she was the last surviving member of her family.

She is survived by her husband, Judge Oliver D. Kessel of Ripley; three daughters, Mrs. Elaine Stone of Ripley, Mrs. Sandra Rowley of Santa Fe, NM, and Mrs. Ella Dee Caperton of Paris, France; eight-grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday, May 5, 1992, at the Epworth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Echols officiating.  Burial as in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ripley.  Parsons Funeral Home, Ripley, was in charge of arrangement.
