"Lisa" Renee (Lewis) Smolder
Waybright Funeral Home
Lisa Renee Smolder, 59, of Ripley, WV was visited in the early morning hours of January 17th by the Lord's angels and carried off to heaven. She was at home, where she wanted to be, surrounded by her loving family.
Lisa lost her mother, Marie Lewis, at an early age to cancer. She was forced to grow up quickly, and became wise beyond her years. Her late father, Dr. Richard Lewis, helped provide her with an excellent foundation and education.
She is survived by her soul mate of over 40 years, her husband, Ed B. Smolder. She was so proud of her two children who she nurtured and loved into successful adults.
Her son, Eddie, lives in Ripley along with his wife, Brooke, and daughter, Braylie, and young son, Eddric. Her daughter, Alicia Marie, married a successful Angus Cattle Breeder, Jamie Kinsey. They have one daughter, Eliza Marie, and they live in Flemington, WV.
Lisa was "in love with love". She dedicated her life to family, friends and education. She got her BS degree in Elementary Education from the University of Kentucky. She also earned her Masters Plus 45 degree from WVU. She taught school for 27 ½ years and loved every minute of it. Her passion as a teacher was to see her students bloom and grow by learning to read. Students who passed through her classes over the years were all treated as family and were loved unconditionally by Lisa. Her career was brought to a screeching halt by cancer in 2011. Lisa fought courageously for four years but the Lord's timing is not ours.
Lisa had many loving friends and family that accompanied her through her journey. The family would especially like to thank special friends, Bea, Dawn, Paula, Cathy, Joyce, Kristal, Deborah and Wilma. Also, the family would like to offer extended gratitude to Karen a reliable, loyal worker who also became like a member of family.
Home health nurse, Chasity, was efficient and professional. She became part of the family. Towards the end of her journey nurse practitioner, Janice, was kind to treat and comfort Lisa until the very end of her journey. She managed Lisa's symptoms timely and efficiently.
The family would like to express their gratitude and respect for the WVU physicians at CAMC surgeon, Dr. Michael Elmore, and his staff, Christina and Tracy. Dr. Elmore and his staff exhibited extreme expertise and hope during Lisa's journey. Dr. Elmore's professionalism and bed side manner are second to none. Lisa truly loved him and his staff.
Lisa fought cancer with grit and determination that was an inspiration to many. She fought so hard so that she could spend more time with her family, especially her three loving grandchildren.
Lisa's generous heart, gentle spirit, and passion for teaching young children will never be forgotten in Jackson County. Words cannot express the amount of love Lisa held in her heart for her family and friends.
Visitation will be held 12:00 to 2:00pm and 6:00 to 8:00pm Tuesday, January 20th at the Waybright Funeral Home in Ripley. A memorial service celebrating Lisa's life and faith will be January 21st at 1:00pm at Ripley's Epworth United Methodist Church. A special gathering of friends will be held at the funeral home after the service. A private gravesite ceremony with family will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donation to the Lisa Smolder Scholarship Fund. A community fund is being built in memory to support education. Donations can be made to:
