Opal Cook Burns, 79, of Kenna, W.Va., passed away on Oct. 10, 2011, at the Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston following a brief battle with cancer. She was born on July 4, 1932 in Obapa, W.Va. in Clay County to the late Burl B. and Icie Harriet Griffith Cook.
Opal was retired from Carbon Fuel Company in Charleston, W.Va. She was a very active member of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Ripley.
She is survived by her brother, Lowell Cook of Elkview; sisters, Oleta Aeiker of St. Albans, Alberta Ashley of Clendenin, Ohio, Ann Monroe of Lady Lake, Fla., and Ondra Wilson of Mineral Wells; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Ray K. Burns, and four brothers, Leo, Lawrence, Lewis and Larry.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Epworth United Methodist Church, 229 N. Church St., Ripley, W.Va. with Rev. Teresa Deane officiating. Entombment will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park and Chapel Mausoleum in St. Albans, W.Va. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at Waybright Funeral Home, 511 S. Church St., Ripley, W.Va.
The family requests that donations in Opal's memory be made to Hubbard Hospice House, 101 Kennawa Drive, Charleston, WV 25311-1824.
