Shirley Jean Coomes, 79, formerly of Ripley, WV, passed away on June 10, 2015, from a short illness at Heartland of Dublin in Dublin, OH.
She was born on March 27, 1936 in Kanawha County, WV, daughter of Auvil B. Chancey and Ethel Mae (Skeen) Chancey.
Shirley was a retired school teacher who taught her first 11 years in the Cincinnati, OH area. She then spent over 30 years in the Jackson County school district, with most of her years teaching Art at Ripley High School. She was also an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma in Jackson County. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Katy (Coomes) Ulm, son-in-law, Scott Ulm, and grandchildren, Nathan, Cameron, and Kali Ulm, Shawnee Hills, OH; grandchildren, Justine Bowie, Salt Lake City, UT and Jared Bowie, Seattle, WA; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Marcie Chancey, Fort Mill, SC; sister and brother-in-law, Ed and Mary (Chancey) Talbott, Grundy, VA.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; and her daughter, Marla (Coomes) Bowie.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 19, 2015, at 7:00 pm at Epworth United Methodist Church, Ripley, WV, with John Gunther officiating.
