RIPLEY – John Kenna Kerwood, 89, of Ripley, passed away Saturday, September 11, 2010 in Huntington following a brief illness.
He was born February 25, 1921 in Jackson County, son of the late John K. and Winifred Casto Kerwood. A graduate of Ripley High School, he joined the Marine Corp. and served in the pacific theatre during WW-II. Following the war John returned to Ripley and began selling new cars, a career that spanned many years and several local dealers and culminated with his retirement from Dalley Chevrolet.
John was a long-time member of the Epworth United Methodist Church and also belonged to the Marine Corp. League, American Legion, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, Masons and Parkersburg Elk’s Lodge. He and his wife of 70 years Delcia shared a passion for playing bridge and square dancing and were known throughout the region for both activities.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Delcia; son John Richard Kerwood (Lynne) of Atlanta, GA; brother Joseph E. Kerwood of Myrtle Beach, SC; sister Judy Aylestock of Sterling, VA; grandchildren Col. John Glenn Kerwood, with the Marines in Africa and Jeffrey Kerwood of Atlanta, GA; great-grandchildren Analynn Kerwood, Jeffrey Jacob Kerwood, Evan Eugene Kerwood and John William Kerwood and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, a sister, Jane Harmon and a brother, James Oliver Kerwood, preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held Friday, September 17 at 2 p.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church with Reverend Teresa Deane officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call two hours prior to the service at the church.
In keeping with John’s wishes, he was cremated. He also asked that memorial contributions be made to Epworth United Methodist Church in lieu of flowers.
